Be A Morning Person

Wednesday, 6 January 2016
For many having a good morning means having a great day. For me I've always been a morning person, even when suffering with insomnia, it sets me up for the day ahead and any challenges it may throw at me. I love getting up whilst the sun is still rising and find it quite peaceful in knowing that everyone else is still sleeping, but most of all I love how much more I can get done in the day!

1) Give yourself 5 minutes or so to rest
Don't let your alarm go off and jump out of bed straight away. I always give myself 5 or so minutes just to lay there, stretch, let my eyes adjust and generally just wake up. There's nothing I hate more than my alarm going off and having to launch myself out of bed straight away.
2) Get a head start
I love having time to myself in the morning to just go at my own pace and not have to run round like a maniac. I give myself time to sit and have a scroll through Instagram, check my emails and a look at the news with a brew before I have to start getting ready. Leaving me feeling relaxed and accomplished for the rest of the day.
3) Get hydrated
That groggy feeling in the morning is because your body is dehydrated from the night. You need to start getting your body rehydrated again after the 8 or so hours without. I've recently started drinking a glass of hot water with lemon in the morning myself, the lemon will assist in getting your digestive system ready for your upcoming breakfast.
4) Have a set nighttime routine
The main point is to make sure you have enough sleep, experts recommend 7-9 hours sleep. At first try cutting back your bed time. Typically go to sleep at 1am? Try going at 12 then working back until 10pm over the next few weeks. The next thing is to relax, personally I get a cup of tea and try reading for half an hour before I go to sleep. Having a routine like this can help to creating a calming presence and your body will begin to recognise this and know to turn off of a night time.
Have you got any tips on how to make mornings more bearable? I'd love to hear!

  1. I for sure should try out #1 and #4, haha! It's my goal for the next month to settle back into a sleep routine because over that Christmas break it went right out the window.

  3. I love this post, I've always been a morning person but on days where I just don't wanna get up I always lie in bed and just give myself 10 minutes to ease myself into the idea of leaving my bed!

  6. I definitely needed to read this, I'm SOOO bad at getting up in the mornings haha, especially this week! I always try to hydrate first thing, so drink a glass of water and then hop in the shower to try and wake myself up. Definitely going to try these tips, thank you! Katie x

  7. Where did you get that cup from? I must have it! I have a lot of trouble with bad sleep because of a course of anti-depressants and all I want is to be able to get a good nights sleep and be a morning person, you can get so much more done when you wake up early over staying up late and it makes me feel so much better! These are good tips and I think once my sleeping pattern sorts itself out (I've had to have sleeping tablets alongside my other ones now so hopefully they'll help me get in to the swing of things) I'll start following these more closely, I definitely need to start drinking more water instead of coffee so that'll definitely help haha x

    1. I've seen a lot of my patients have trouble sleeping whilst they're on anti-depressants, either not being able to sleep and some having trouble with plenty of sleep but being tired all the time! Hope the new medication helps in improving things.

  9. After leaving my office job that required me waking up really early, as well as discovering blogs and YouTube (aka going to bed at crazy times) it's so hard to wake up early and feel refreshed these days. I will try these tips soon for sure.

  15. Thanks for sharing these ideas. I use to be such a morning person when I was younger. Now I just snooze my alarm and lay in bed for hours sometimes. It is so bad, but I'm going to try get up earlier and work out every morning from now x

  16. You know, the funny thing is that I become a morning person when I launch myself out of bed. If I wait 5 more minutes I'll only get up tired. When I immediately jump out of bed I'm 100% awake. So weird.

  17. I've never been a morning person haha! I like night time when it's quiet and peaceful and dark. I was a morning person for about six weeks in the summer of 2011 and it was the best thing ever - I'd like to get back to that someday.
